The Ulysses
|
To the north of bluff point lies the wreck of a 1992 ton British steamship. Built in 1871 for the Ocean S.S. Co. by A. Leslie and Co. the Ulysses struck the reef and sank, with a general cargo, on August 17, 1887, bound for Penang from London. the stern of the wreck sits in 27 meters, lying on her port side. She is completely open, her main deck timbers gone but girders still intact, and her hull can be totally explored forward to the engines where the wreck becomes a confusion of metal. The forward section of section of the wreck lies on the reef in shallow water. Masts and part of her cargo of machinery litter the sea bed and are covered with a profusion of soft corals. The prop and rudder along with the distinctive shape of her stern are very photogenic and the hole wreck is covered by an encrustation of life, including some intricate fan corals in her interior. In the shallows, fish life abounds amid scattered wreckage, possibly form other earlier wrecks, and in the "valley" behind the keel hide several resident crocodile fish. |
