The Olden (Kimon M.)
|
|
The close proximity of this wreck to the wreck of the
Chrisoula K has resulted in confusion over the years. A published dive
guide clearly shows this wreck labeled as the Chrisoula K. However it is
their cargoes which help to prove their identities, that and a photo taken
from the bridge of the Giannis D as she sank. There are no Italian tiles
on the Olden, she was carrying a cargo of barley, hance the rumors of a
wreck called the Lintil, and she lies on her side, whereas the Chrisoula K,
complete with Italian tiles, sits upright only a few hundred yards away. With the exception of the holds forward to the bow, the Olden is totally intact, lying on her starboard side in 27 meters of water. Her prop and rudder are still in place, and her huge engine room provides an amazing tour for the more experienced diver. It is possible to swim right through the various floors of the engine room and exit where the bulk head for the number one hold should be. It is obvious from the state of the wreck that on the 2nd of Feb. 1987, on her way to Jeddah, she ploughed head long into the reef, causing a large crater damage, her entire crew being rescued by the ro-ro container vessel Gala de Mar. With her bows high and dry she broke in two, rolling over and leaving the fore section to be flattened by subsequent storms, the aft section settling as it is today on the sandy bottom. The Panamanian bulk carrier was 213 meters long, of 27,288 tons and built in 1967 at Bremen. |
