The Giannis D

The wreck graveyard of the Red Sea is a likely name for
the exposed reefs of Abu Nuhas at the southern end of the Straits of Gubal.
These reefs have been responsible for the deaths of several vessels. The
most recent wreck here was the Giannis D, which met her fate early one
morning of April 19, 1983. Giannis D was built at Imabari in 1969. She was 99 meters
long and weighed almost 300 tons. She
was bound for Hodeidah from Rijeka, equipped with modern navigation aids,
when she struck the reef of "the seven deaths". A navigational
error seems to have been the cause of her demise. She struck the reef
squarely, and quickly broke her back ahead of the main bridge section. An
initial survey around the wreck revealed a huge tear in her side, and she
settled into the reef in an attitude that has remained to this day. The
ship remained half-sunk on the reef for a few weeks until a storm ripped
the Giannis D in two. The stern and bridge section sank first, which was
later followed by the bow that became lodged on the bottom of the coral
slope. Today, the bow of the wreck lies on its port side, in a
depth of approximately 20 meters. The stern and bridge section lies on
about a 45 degree angle to its port side in approximately 24 meters of
water. Part of the bridge structure and masts come to within 4 meters of
the surface. The Bow section is not often dived as the main section of the
ship has so much to offer, including the ideal dive profile. After only 14 years in the water, the neighboring reef is
beginning to claim the wreck and she is now engulfed in soft corals and
other marine life. At the stern her bridge, engine room, and companionways
are all easily accessible and never fail to thrill even the most earnest
of wreck divers. To photographers, the wreck is a gift. Strong, natural
light provides a great opportunity to capture the atmosphere of this
fascinating wreck on film. Over the years little has changed, accept that every year
a new coral species gains a foothold on the steel surfaces and another
species of fish leaves the reef to make the wreck its new home. |
