The Chrisoula K

The Chrisoula K was a modern Greek motor freighter. She was 380 feet long and was carrying 3700 tons of Italian granite tiles bound for Jeddah, when she hit the reef head on and sank in October 1981 - another victim of careless navigation.

The wreck of the Chrisoula K is easy to find, as the remains of her bow sit on top of the reef at its east end. The shallowest point is around 12 meters, and the stern is in a maximum of 28 m. The bridge section is easily accessible through windows and bulkhead doors, and is a good place to begin your exploration before delving deeper into the engine room. The engines are in remarkably good condition. Every available space is slowly being commandeered by the ship’s new crew of glassy sweepers. Although access to the wreck is reasonably easy and a lot of light finds its way through hatchways and collapsed bulkheads, numerous reports indicate that the wreck is becoming unstable and that parts of the hull have collapsed after periods of bad weather.

Today, soft corals currently dominate the sunken vessel. Every year new species seem to make the wreck its new home. She has also become home to a prodigious variety of fish life. However, recent wave action has now made this wreck unsafe for diving. Entering her engine room is via the bridge skylights and should only be under taken by very experienced divers using proper wreck penetration techniques.
